even healthy can taste good

Not too much going on here this week.  I’ve been busy at work and Mike’s been busy working.  This week I have been better about meal planning and “sticking to the script” which allowed me the opportunity to cook something quite awesome.  While I didn’t take any pictures of the actual burgers that we ate, I wanted to share the success with you (and recipe for that matter).

Turkey Burgers!

!!Please don’t tune me out because of your bad experience with turkey burgers.  Keep reading, you might actually learn something!!

Trust me! I’m all about flavor.  If “healthy food” lacks flavor then its not worth it and I’ll tell you why.  After you eat that really healthy salad and you’re still hungry or craving something more than a bunny would eat… you tend to munch and snack and in turn can consume way more than if you had just eaten the unhealthy thing in the first place and therefore, eliminating the healthy factor of the healthy food.

Turkey Burger Recipe

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • ¼ cup of finely chopped peppers and sweet onion, sautéed
  • 1 egg
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce (low sodium)
  • ½ tsp crushed garlic
  • Ground black pepper
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Thyme
  • Touch of salt
  • Italian Bread Crumbs

Gently mix all ingredients until barely incorporated. Add enough Italian Bread Crumbs to bind the mix while still leaving the mixture very sticky. On the plate you’ll use to transfer the patties to the grill, sprinkle some bread crumbs . As you form each patty, “crust” them in the bread crumbs (like you would bread chicken) to prevent the meat from sticking to the grill. Make a thumb print in the middle of each to prevent the burgers from being “puffy”. Cook until no longer pink and enjoy with a little melted cheese on top.

The less the patties are mixed, the better. It keeps them from being dry and tough. The bread crumb crust allows you to bind the mixture without making the inside too try and even adds a bit of a crunch to the outside.

Even Mike liked it (probably a 3.5 out of 5).

I hope you enjoy these as much as I did.  Feel free to tweak the seasoning mixture until you get the flavor you’re going for.  Don’t be afraid to experiment!

Happy cooking!
