excuse me… what did you say?

imageFor Christmas I purchased a subscription to “Runner’s World” magazine.  It has been great just reading what all goes on in the running community.  We took about 4 months off “cardio” to get into MAXIMUM STRENGTH, so needless to say, I still haven’t run one session since the purchase of the magazines. =) I’m just that dedicated.  That all is about to change as we head into spring training for triathlon season!  I think my body and I are in for a huge shock even though my muscles are so big and strong.

In reading my RW magazines… I’ve noticed the term fartlek used frequently.  Yes you heard me correctly, fartlek!  I still have yet to figure out what this word means even in 6 issues (I’m sure RW has explained it, just I haven’t made much sense of it yet.)  So without further ado…

fartlek:

A Fartlek (Swedish for “speed play”) is simply sprinting and jogging off and on during a run. For example, a normal fartlek workout be a 40-60 minute training run. However, instead of keeping the same pace through the whole workout you sprint, then jog, then sprint again. You can customize fartleks to how you feel. If you feel sluggish, limit the number of sprints you do, and take more time to recover. If you feel great, run the sprints hard, and sprint again maybe when you don’t feel totally recovered.

Pretty interesting stuff.  Enjoy your fun factoid friday! and I guess get out and run?!?  I honestly won’t be because Mike and I are gearing up for a 27 mile bike race/ride tomorrow (and google maps says its 29… and I’ve only ever ridden about 18… and OH MY!!! can you tell I’m a little nervous)

  1. Mom mentioned you guys were doing a Maximum Strength thing. You'll have to tell us more about your "end results" when you've completed the program! Also, good luck on your run, and your fartleks!
